Induction heating for the tube and pipe industry

EFD Induction is very well known within the Tube and Pipe industry. Our Weldac family of welders confirms our leading position as a provider of cost-effective, high-uptime systems.

Some of the areas where we supply solutions are:

Induction welding

Induction welding for the tube and pipe industry

Induction heating is a proven solution for welding stainless steel, aluminum, low-carbon and high-strength steel.

You can handle dimensions all the way from OD 3/8”-26”/10 mm–660 mm. This is possible because EFD Induction is the only induction heating supplier that can deliver power output of up to 2 MW.

Our range of solid-state welders is called Weldac, and you can choose from two basic designs: one-cabinet for low-power welders; two-cabinet for high-power welders. Modular design with independent full-bridge IGBT inverters makes Weldac compact, saving valuable floor space and simplifying in-line integration and retrofitting. Weldac can be fitted with induction coils and/or contact heads.

Tube and Pipe Annealing

EFD Induction has developed a range of full body and seam annealing systems to meet your specific requirements. Common areas are annealing of high-grade steels and pipes produced according to different specifications such as API.

There are many advantages to choosing EFD Induction for tube and pipe annealing. These include: a constant power factor at all power levels, quick lifting of coils to avoid damage, continuous electronic automatic load matching, no need for operator intervention when changing tube size or wall thickness.

Within seam annealing there are two more smart EFD Induction solutions worth looking at in more detail: Traveling seam annealing and orbital seam annealing.

Traveling seam annealing moves the induction coils horizontally across the seam of the pipe seam. This ensures a uniform temperature all the way out to the ends of the pipes, thus minimizing waste.

With orbital seam tracking, an optical camera ensures constant heating of the weld. The camera simply follows the seam along a white tracking line painted on the pipe, and compensates for positional changes by rotating the induction coils (+/- 15°).

Induction preheating in the tube and pipe industry

Induction produces quick, accurate, controllable and repeatable heat. This makes it an excellent method for preheating tubes and pipes to prevent cracking, reduce hardening structures and increase welding speed.

EFD Induction offers a series of solutions for induction preheating within tube and pipe. Some examples are heating prior to welding, tin remelting, galvanizing, pipe forming and bending, and application of plastic powder or paint to tube.

You can also use induction preheating  to get better adhesion of insulation round heating pipes (compare with the process of adhering insulation round cables and wires).

Induction postheating in the tube and pipe industry

Induction postheating is used in the tube and pipe industry  to eliminate hardening structures, which may have arisen after welding. New steel quality guidelines, in particular APT, often demand reheating after welding.

Thanks to the accuracy and controllability of heat induction, it is possible to increase precision in postheating. This, in turn, produces pipes that are more durable, more resistant to cracks and less susceptible to corrosion.

High-output solid-state welders

Weldac - High-output solid-state welders

The Weldac is EFD Induction's family of high-output solid-state welders based on rugged, reliable IGBT transistor inverters. A complete system, the Weldac consists of a frequency converter, output matching section, busbar, external control system and coil connection.

The Weldac system is available in two basic designs: single-cabinet for welders up to 600 kW; double-cabinet for welders up to 2,000 kW. Weldac is a proven solution for welding stainless steel, aluminum, low-carbon steel and high-strength steel.

Modular design with independent IGBT inverters makes Weldac compact, saving valuable floor space and simplifying in-line integration and retrofitting. The Weldac system can be fitted with induction coils or contact welding heads.

Induction coils

Having the right coil—and keeping it in the best possible condition—is critical to the efficiency of your induction solution. After all, the coil is the component that actually delivers the heat to the workpiece.

Our induction coil services cover all your coil needs: from coil design through to coil manufacture, installation, maintenance, repair and replacement.

Coil design

Correct coil design is essential to cost-effective induction heating. This service ensures you get design customized to your heating applications and materials. Which, in turn, means that you get the right heating patterns and your induction heating power supply delivers maximum output. You can use the service when introduction induction heating for the first time, or when upgrading existing coils.

Coil database

Each EFD Induction coil is documented in a database containing all essential information. This makes it quick and easy for us to repair and replace your coils with constant quality. You can use the service when introducing induction heating for the first time, or when upgrading existing coils.
